Dancing Tops

Dancing Tops is a set of customizable spinning tops, comprised of interchangeable tips and body elements. While conventional spinning tops are made to spin longer and steadier, this project highlights the unpredictable movement that results when a top is unbalanced or off-centered.
The rapid advancement
of digital technology over the last twenty years has brought a shift in the societal perception of objects for play. We now understand these objects as having an influence on humans’ mental and psychological development and self-regulation. Structured, didactic, and digital play objects have become more widely available, while people have ever fewer opportunities to try, fail, and discover in more open-ended and embodied ways.
Dancing Tops
revolves around the idea of curiosity and uncertain outcomes through play, allowing visitors to engage in a process of physical trial and discovery. Visitors are encouraged to create their own tops by testing out different combinations and discovering the unique movement each object produces.
